This course will provide an advanced examination of issues associated with the end of life. The course will begin with several weeks looking at theoretical approaches to bioethical issues and then will turn to particular end of life topics, including futility, withdrawal of hydration and nutrition, definitions of death, physician assisted suicide, euthanasia. In addition to weekly seminar, students are encouraged to sit in on ethics consults at both SHC and LPCH (with permission).

Requirements: Students are expected to attend regularly and have done the required reading. In addition, as a final project, students will be asked to analyze a particular case based upon the knowledge they have gained.
