Neuroethics Conference: Mapping the Field

May 13-14, 2002

Golden Gate Club, San Francisco, California
Conference Chair: Zach Hall, Ph.D.

This conference will delineate a new field of Neuroethics concerned with the social, legal and ethical implications of modern research on the brain. The conference will bring together neuroscientists, bioethicists, public policy makers and scholars in the humanities for discussion and debate on these issues.

Background

Rapidly expanding knowledge in the basic and clinical neurosciences offers not only the promise of dramatic cures for debilitating illness of the central nervous system but a transformed understanding of how the brain works. The evolution in our thinking about the functions of the brain brings with it the need to alter our view of the human mind, personhood, responsibility, and personal identity. With the goal of mapping a new field of "neuroethics" to address these issues, this conference will be devoted to assessing the state of neuroscience research and identifying the ethical and policy challenges that accompany this body of knowledge.

There is no registration fee.  Transportation between hotels and conference center and meals will be covered by the conference.
