Summer Camp Social Activities and Tours

Burke's Canoe Trips
Thursday, June 19, 1:00 - 5:30 (return time depends on individual canoes)

Cost: $58.00 per canoe - cash only at time of rental (3 adults per
canoe, or 2 adults and 2 small children per canoe, no children under 5 years). Transportation not included.

Description:
You are about to embark on a gorgeous ten mile trip through redwoods, mountains and warm sunny beaches, paddling leisurely downstream to the resort town of Guerneville, beginning from Burke's headquarters in Forestville. The wildlife on the Russian River is spectacular. Have fun viewing great blue heron, osprey, egrets, river otters, turtles and more. You can comfortably do this trip in approximately 3 1/2 hours, actual canoeing time; however, most people picnic, swim, sunbathe, etc., and are usually out on this trip for close to 4 or 5 hours. It is recommended that you start the trip no later than 1:00 pm, in order to have enough time to enjoy it. Burke's provides a courtesy shuttle service to return you to the starting point at their headquarters. It runs every half hour until 6:00 pm.

Burke's requires all adults to be good, strong swimmers and children should have at least some swimming ability. (The minimum age for children is 5 years old.) For children between the ages of 5 and 11, there must be 2 adults in the canoe with them who are good swimmers. Life jackets and coolers are provided.

Transportation is not provided for this tour. Guests will pay Burke's at the time of canoe rental, and they only accept cash. ATMs are located nearby. Burke's is about 15 minutes from our hotel (north on Highway 101, exit west at Highway 116 West for about 14 miles, going through Sebastopol, turn right onto Mirabel Road and go one mile). Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center: Docent-Led Tour and
Cartooning Class

Thursday, June 19, 2:00 - 3:30 pm

Cost: $8.00 for adults, $5.00 for youths (ages 4 - 17), $5.00 for seniors (62+), free for children under 3. No transporation provided.

Description:

Mark your calendar and join us to tour one of the most unique museums in the world. A visit to the Charles M. Schulz Museum offers a truly unique atmosphere for our private docent-led group tour of the galleries and exhibit halls. The museum houses permanent exhibits with a collection of over 7,000 original Schulz Peanuts strips from which they draw their exhibits throughout the year.

Our tour will end with a chance to try your hand at cartooning in a special mini-workshop just for us in the Education Center, which should delight kids, as well adults! The tour will take approximately an hour and plan on another half hour to visit the gift shop or perhaps the ice arena. The museum also has a whimsical outdoor courtyard with Peanuts statues, one-of-a-kind sculptures and a kite eating tree! A walk through the Snoopy shaped labyrinth is a great way to wind down after your visit. For our 2:00 pm private group tour, a minimum of 10 guests are required to pre-register. The maximum number of guests is 40. No transporation is provided for this tour, but maps will be available in the Summer Camp Staff Office in the Jack London Board Room. Safari West: African Queen Tour

Description:

Safari West is the spirit of Africa in the heart of the Wine Country! Here's a wild idea - a group safari aboard the African Queen! This is a 90-minute adventure led by one of Safari West's naturalists. You will board the African Queen, a 25-foot long trailer adapted with benches and a thatched grass roof for a journey through the savanah grasslands and breathtaking view of Watusi Lake, and then it's time to explore on foot. The second half of the tour allows you to walk through the inner compound, where you'll encounter giraffe, primates, and birds in the open-air aviary. A minimum of 20 guests are required to pre-register for our group tour. Round-trip transportation by coach is included in the tour price. Biodynamic Vineyard Walking Tour and Tasting: Benziger Family Winery

Without passion, there is no wine. There is only grape juice. It takes a heart afire to nurture roots in rocky, sun-drenched soil through all forces of nature to a fruitful harvest! Take a close-up look at the vines, learn about the Benziger Family Winery's biodynamic farming approach, the history of the Winery, get a little mild exercise and enjoy their breathtaking views! Our 45-minute walking tour includes terraced vineyards, a crush pad, and the estate's wine caves. The tour culminates in a guided wine tasting (included in the price) on the Winery's outdoor Oak Terrace. Two additional wine samples are offered in the Tasting Room, where a 10% discount is extended to tour guests interested in purchasing wine. This private tour for adults only, age 21 and older, is limited to a maximum of 35 guests. Round-trip transportation by coach is included in the tour price. Bicycle Rentals
Friday or Saturday, June 20 & 21, 1:00 - 5:30 pm

Cost: $25 per person (includes bike helmet). (Children must be at least 8 years old.)

Strike out on your own or meet your friends for a cycling adventure with a rental bike from Getaway Adventures, located approximately 10 minutes from our hotel, at 2228 Northpoint Parkway. Once you have been outfitted with a bike and helmet, ride directly from the shop onto a bike path from Santa Rosa to Sebastopol, an easy and mostly flat 9 to 12-mile (depending on route choice) ride in the Sonoma countryside. Trail maps will be provided. Your bike will tuned up and ready to go, and fitted to your height, if you pre-register for a bike rental. Guests will be cycling on Specialized Comfort bikes, which may be rented on Friday and Saturday afternoons at the $25 per day price, provided a minimum of 10 guests pre-register. If the minimum requirement is not met, the cost will be $30 person. Come by the staff office in the Jack London Board Room if you would like information on potential riding partners.

Annadel State Park: Guided Hiking Tour

Join us for an invigorating afternoon hike in Annadel State Park. A van will pick you up at the hotel and take you to the rolling hills of Santa Rosa's premier park, where beautiful vistas await you. Our local guide will lead an approximate two-hour hike to Lake Ilsanjo and then on to a panoramic view point, while acquainting you with the history, flora and fauna of the area. This approximately 3-mile hike is rated intermediate and is suited for all abilities. Round-trip transportation by van is included in the price of the tour, and you will be supplied with mineral water. A minimum of 10 guests are required for this tour.

Jelly Belly Factory Tour

Step into the Jelly Belly Factory and smell the aroma of chocolate, apricot, cinnamon or pineapple, whatever is being cooked up that day! A visit to the candy making factory in Fairfield, California, located about an hour's drive from our hotel in Santa Rosa, is a sugary delight. During the 40-minute walking tour, Jelly Belly guides will show you a real working factory where they cook up over 150 different sweet treats. Learn the secrets to how they create the legendary Jelly Belly jelly bean, and discover why it takes more than a week to make a single bean. See taffy, chocolates, and wild gummi critters in the making, too. Tours are especially popular and referred to by many as a "unique and sweet experience." They do not take reservations for the tour, so if you would like to tour with members of our group, you should meet there by 2:30. Tours are free and run daily from 9:00 to 4:00 pm. Tours depart approximately every 15 minutes throughout the day and last approximately 40 minutes. The wait for a tour may be as long as 90 minutes during the summer and some holidays, but the typical wait is just 15 minutes.

No group transportation is planned for this tour, but maps will be available in the Summer Camp Staff Office in the Jack London Board Room. Please be aware that even though the estimated travel time is approximately one hour, during peak commute hours, it could be substantially longer. Eco-Sustainable Farm

Description:

The Occidental Arts and Ecology Center (OAEC) is located in western Sonoma County on 80 acres of gardens, meadows, and oak, fir and redwood forests. The Center's bio-intensive organic gardens and orchards have been a source of inspiration and training for thousands of gardeners, farmers and landscapers over the past 30 years. The OAEC is a 501 (c)3 non-profit research, education and organizing center founded in 1994 by a group of biologists, horticulturists, educators, activists and artists, working to create ecologically and economically sustainable communities, which respect and restore natural ecosystems while satisfying human needs. The Center believes the most effective way to address environmental problems related to human development is by cultivating ecological literacy and developing the capacity of communities and their organizations to participate in policy processes that affect their lives and the environment. In a typical year, the Center receives over 3,000 visitors. Children typically enjoy visiting the farm and the tour itself, and there is a play area available for small children. Shopping in Downtown Santa Rosa

Description:

Welcome to Santa Rosa, where everything comes together, wine country and farm country, redwood forests and rivers, lakes and ocean! And in the center, a charming, thriving downtown, lined with intriguing shops and restaurants that delight casual diners and epicureans alike. Get together with friends for an afternoon of shopping. There is no formal tour or transportation planned, but visit the staff office in the Jack London Board Room to pick-up maps and information. Shopping in Santa Rosa is concentrated in three areas: Downtown Main Street (4th Street is lined with shops, restaurants, pubs, bookstores, coffee shops), Railroad Square (historic section on western side of downtown area, with shops, restaurants and antiques stores housed in turn-of-the-century stone buildings), and the Santa Rosa Plaza (mall located at intersection of Highways 101 and 12, featuring 110 major retail as well as specialty stores).
